Cyclone Remal has impacted 4.6 million people and displaced 800,000, according to the British High Commission in Dhaka. In response, the UK is providing Tk 7.5 crore (£500,000) in crucial support.
This aid package will supply essential items such as food, clean water, sanitation, and hygiene products to over 43,000 individuals in the Bagerhat, Satkhira, Khulna, Bhola, Pirojpur, and Patuakhali districts. Priority will be given to the most vulnerable groups, including women, children, and those displaced from their homes.
The funds will be managed by Start Fund Bangladesh and implemented by Christian Aid, Action Aid, Jago Nari, and Coast Foundation, complementing the ongoing efforts of the Bangladesh government.
The UK is a key supporter of international humanitarian initiatives and disaster risk financing, contributing to Cyclone Remal’s relief through organizations like UNICEF’s Today and Tomorrow Initiative (TTI) and the UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF). As a major donor to CERF, the UK is helping provide a total of £5.8 million (Tk 87.6 crores) for those affected.
Furthermore, UK funding enabled the temporary relocation of over 30,000 people from coastal areas to secure shelters, ensuring their safety. These shelters were stocked with food, hygiene kits, and medical supplies in preparation for the evacuees.
