“Sweden stands with the people of Bangladesh during this challenging time,” stated the ambassador. “We are pleased to provide crucial assistance to those in need.”
The aid, channeled through the Swedish Red Cross, Save the Children, and Islamic Relief, aims to assist over 86,000 people by supplying essential items such as food, shelter, and livelihood opportunities. Additionally, it will facilitate the return to school for 15,000 children, complementing the efforts of the Bangladeshi government.
A key component of the support includes cash assistance, empowering families to prioritize their immediate needs, whether it be food, clothing, shelter, or healthcare. This approach allows for greater flexibility and self-determination among the affected families.
The Swedish Red Cross, in collaboration with the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS), will provide cash support to 6,500 households in the most severely impacted areas, enabling them to procure basic necessities swiftly.
Save the Children will distribute cash grants and hygiene kits to 2,000 households and offer shelter assistance to 600 households in the Khulna and Barguna districts. Furthermore, the organization will aid in the reconstruction of 24 schools, allowing 15,000 children to resume their education.
Islamic Relief will focus on providing cash support and hygiene supplies to 7,200 households in the Patuakhali and Barguna districts, with particular attention to female-headed households, widows, and pregnant or lactating women.
Highlighting Sweden’s commitment to global humanitarian efforts, the ambassador noted that Sweden is one of the top contributors to the UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), which has allocated $7.5 million (approximately Tk87.6 crore) to aid those affected by Cyclone Remal.
Sweden’s comprehensive support reflects its dedication to alleviating the suffering caused by natural disasters and promoting sustainable recovery and development in affected communities.
