Under the theme “Ensuring Safety and Health at Work in a Changing Climate,” the discussion explored Bangladesh’s LPG sector’s current growth trajectory, navigated regulatory challenges, and dissected the health and safety dynamics of LPG usage. Chaired by Nurul Amin, Chairman of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC), the roundtable boasted a panel comprising esteemed members from various sectors, including regulatory bodies, industry, and civil society.
Tanzeem Chowdhury, CEO of Omera Petroleum Limited, moderated the session, during which speakers underscored the profound positive impact of LPG on the environment and health. They highlighted LPG’s significantly lower emissions compared to coal and oil, emphasizing its role in mitigating deforestation and promoting better respiratory health. Moreover, the meeting addressed concerns such as misinformation and improper handling practices within the LPG sector.
Chairman Nurul Amin commended Omera for adhering to safety standards and ensuring fair pricing, signaling the government’s commitment to formulating rules and guidelines to enhance LPG safety and awareness. Participants stressed the importance of cautious LPG usage, particularly in light of its increasing adoption in residential and commercial settings, urging governmental policy support for the sector.
The event also shed light on Omera’s initiatives to bolster safety, including refurbishing cylinders every ten years, and its role in promoting awareness and training programs for workers and consumers alike. As Bangladesh’s demand for LPG continues to soar, with projections reaching 3 million tonnes by 2030, Omera remains steadfast in its dedication to providing sustainable energy solutions while prioritizing health, safety, and environmental sustainability.
Aligned with the global celebration of World Day for Health and Safety at Work on April 28th, this year’s theme, “healthy workers, decent working environment, will build smart Bangladesh,” resonates deeply with Omera’s commitment to fostering safer and healthier workplaces amidst a changing climate.
