The campaign aims to highlight deficiencies in the ADB’s safeguard framework, emphasizing the need for stronger accountability measures to hold the bank and its partners responsible for any negative environmental or social impacts of their projects. Led by environmental and social organizations such as Paribartan, Coastal Livelihood and Environmental Action Network (CLEAN), and Bangladesh Working Group on Ecology and Development (BWGED), along with civil society groups and concerned citizens, the demonstration underscores the collective demand for transparency and accountability in development initiatives.
Speakers at the launch, including Paribartan Director Rashed Ibney Obayed, Program Officer Soma Hasan, and Program Organizer Afsana Mimi, emphasized the grassroots nature of the campaign, which aims to mobilize communities and organizations committed to advancing justice and sustainability in development efforts. They stressed the need for a truly progressive safeguards policy that addresses the challenges faced by human rights defenders and workers, while also ensuring transparency in the private sector.
Ultimately, the ADB’s safeguard policy is intended to help developing member countries manage environmental and social risks associated with development projects, with the aim of minimizing or mitigating any adverse impacts on people and the environment. However, the campaign advocates for a more comprehensive approach that prioritizes the well-being of communities and the planet alongside economic interests.
