Berger Paints: Committed to Innovation and Sustainability Amid Challenges

Berger Paints Bangladesh Limited, a leading player in the domestic paint industry, is increasingly investing in the development of eco-friendly products, despite facing significant challenges from the current economic climate, according to Mohsin Habib Chowdhury, the company’s Chief Operating Officer.

In a recent interview with, Chowdhury highlighted the company’s focus on creating paints with low environmental impact, such as lead-free and low volatile organic compound (VOC) formulations. “These products are vital for reducing air pollution and supporting a healthier environment,” he stated.

However, the paint industry, like many others, is grappling with various challenges due to the ongoing global economic slowdown. Rising US dollar prices have created significant hurdles for companies like Berger, which rely on imported raw materials. “The increasing cost of raw materials due to currency fluctuations is a major concern for us,” Chowdhury noted.

The global logistics landscape has also been disrupted by conflicts, such as the Red Sea conflict, which has led to longer lead times and a shortage of shipping vessels in South Asia. This situation is exacerbated by a surge in China’s exports to Western nations, further straining supply chains. As a result, companies are facing delays and increased costs, impacting their overall operations.

Amid these challenges, Chowdhury emphasized the need for regulatory intervention to help alleviate the burdens faced by the paint industry. He pointed out that the government has been charging a supplementary duty of 5 percent on paint products since 2010, with the recent budget extending this tax to primers, which are not luxury items. “Policymakers need to revisit these policies to support the industry’s growth, as paint products play a crucial role in protecting infrastructure,” he urged.

Despite the adversities, Berger Paints remains optimistic about the future. Chowdhury mentioned that the overall sales of paint products are expected to exceed Tk 6,000 crore this year, with steady annual growth of up to 4 percent projected from 2024 to 2028. This growth is driven by factors such as rapid urbanization, technological advancements, and increasing disposable incomes in Bangladesh.

However, the industry has not been immune to setbacks. Last year, sales growth slowed by 7 percent due to the vulnerable macroeconomic situation. Chowdhury noted that per capita paint consumption in Bangladesh stands at just 1.4 kilograms, far below neighboring countries like India and Sri Lanka, where it is 3 kilograms. “This gap presents a significant growth opportunity for the local market,” he added.

The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war has also had a severe impact on the industry, disrupting global supply chains and contributing to a shortage of US dollars in Bangladesh. This has made it difficult for many companies to import raw materials, leading to higher import costs and increased product prices. “The persistent inflationary pressures have forced us to raise our prices,” Chowdhury explained.

In the face of these challenges, Berger Paints continues to innovate and adapt. The company has introduced products specifically tailored to the local climate, such as DampGuard, a water-based coating designed to combat common issues like algae, fungus, and dampness. Other products, like WeatherCoat Smooth and WeatherCoat Supreme, offer enhanced protection against harsh weather conditions, ensuring greater longevity.

Berger’s commitment to innovation extends beyond product development. The company was the first in Bangladesh to introduce a “colour bank” machine, offering over 5,000 shades, and has formed strategic partnerships with global brands like PPG, Clariant, Fosroc, Chugoku, and Beckers Group. These collaborations provide Berger with access to cutting-edge technologies and expertise, enhancing its product portfolio.

Additionally, Berger Paints is dedicated to social responsibility, using eco-friendly materials, reducing its carbon footprint, and supporting local communities. “Our focus on environmental sustainability is in line with global trends, and we are well-positioned to meet the rising demand for eco-friendly paints,” Chowdhury stated.

Despite the economic challenges, Berger Paints remains a market pioneer, leveraging consumer insights to develop targeted solutions. The company’s “Easy Clean” product, a highly washable and scrub-resistant paint, exemplifies its commitment to customer-centric innovation.

Chowdhury concluded by acknowledging the difficulties posed by currency volatility, which has made raw material expenses uncertain and directly affected the company’s profitability. “We recognize the challenges ahead, but our focus on innovation and sustainability will help us navigate these turbulent times,” he said.

Berger Paints Bangladesh continues to lead the way in the paint industry, balancing its commitment to sustainable practices with the need to adapt to a rapidly changing economic landscape.
