Bangladesh Circular Economy Summit Highlights Sustainable Practices in Fashion Industry

On June 11, Dhaka hosted the 2nd Bangladesh Circular Economy Summit, bringing together fashion industry leaders, organizations, and government representatives to advance circularity within the country's apparel and textiles sector. The summit, organized by the Bangladesh Apparel Exchange (BAE) in collaboration with the German development agency GIZ and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, took place at Radisson Blu Water Garden.

The event highlighted the importance of transitioning from a linear economic model to one that emphasizes resource efficiency and waste reduction. Through discussions and engagements, participants focused on propelling this transition within Bangladesh’s apparel and textile industries.

Textile and Jute Minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak served as the chief guest. Notable attendees included former BGMEA president Siddiqur Rahman, Thijs Woudstra, Deputy Head of Mission for the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and Jan Janowski, Deputy Head of Mission for the Embassy of Germany.

Rahman noted the industry’s advancements in circularity and sustainability, citing over 200 certified green garments and more than 500 awaiting certification. He called for support from developed countries for knowledge and technology sharing to enhance circularity.

Thijs Woudstra emphasized the need for robust visibility systems throughout the supply chain to meet regulations and consumer demand for transparency. He recognized the garments industry of Bangladesh as a powerhouse and stressed the potential of circularity to transform the economy.

Jan Janowski called for more ambitious reforms and recognized the essential role of institutions, governments, and cities in creating conditions for a circular economy. He advocated for investment in sustainable production as a strategic decision that could position Bangladesh as a leader in sustainable manufacturing on the global stage.

Mostafiz Uddin, Founder & CEO of Bangladesh Apparel Exchange, expressed pride in the industry’s progress and encouraged continued cooperation to make Bangladesh a leader in sustainability and circularity. “Our government, private sectors, partners, and all stakeholders are working towards a shared vision. The change starts with us. We all have a role in achieving a collective vision for Bangladesh,” he concluded.
